In 1309, Pope Clement V, former Archbishop of Bordeaux, relocated the papacy to the town of Avignon. At the time, wine-growing around the town of Avignon was anything but illustrious. However, the Avignon Papacy did much to advance the reputation of Burgundy wines and promoted viticulture of the surrounding area, which had been initiated and maintained by the Bishops of Avignon.
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape, which literally translates to "The Pope's new castle," was one of the areas that benefited from this promotion of viticulture. Today, it is one of the most important wine regions in France, with over 3,200 hectares of vineyards.
