【Wine Sharing】Climate Change and Wine Production
Climate change is a pressing issue for everyone on Earth. In the world of wine, it is having a significant impact on wine production. In general, the change of growing environment of grapes are altering the wine profile, and more frequent weather hazards are posing threats to the yield. In some cases, entire wine regions may become unsuitable for wine production, while in others, new wine regions may emerge due to more stable weather conditions.
One example of how climate change is changing the wine profile can be seen in Bordeaux. Global warming has led to warmer growing conditions, which increases the potential alcohol content of wine. Nowadays, it's rare to find a Bordeaux red wine with 13% or less alcohol, while back in 1948, Château Mouton Rothschild only had 10.5% alcohol. The flavors of the wine are becoming riper, and the structure of the wine is changing as well.
Weather hazards pose another significant threat to wine production. In some warm wine regions like Spain and Southern France, droughts have become more and more frequent. Some areas in South Africa, California, and Chile are abandoned because of frequent drought. In Burgundy, historically low yields in 2021 were triggered by catastrophic spring frost and compounded by a cold, wet growing season. According to the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB), up to 30–50% of Burgundy's yield was lost regionwide in 2021.
On the other hand, climate change is also bringing opportunities to other wine regions. In Champagne, the weather is generally warmer, leading to fewer poor vintages. In England, which was not traditionally a wine region because it was too cold for growing grapes, global warming has allowed for the production of high-quality sparkling wines in South England.
